Being part of a purpose-driven fellowship of faith like FBC can help us make progress in living a purposeful Christian life. And, of course, there is no substitute for reading and studying the Bible when it comes to growing in our faith. But, good, solid, biblically based literature can greatly assist us in growing toward living a purposeful Christian life as well.We highly recommend that you read
The Purpose-Driven Life, by Rick Warren. But there are many other books that can help you in your spiritual walk as well. For this reason, the pastors at FBC recommend good Bible-based literature for our members to read, in addition to their study of the Bible and involvement in the life of our church.Below are books recommended by our pastoral staff that are categorized under each of the five purposes.WORSHIP

We offer the FIRST Steps course as an orientation for all present and/or potential members of First Baptist Church every Spring and Fall on Sunday evenings. Our next FIRST Steps course will beoffered on Wednesdays at 6 pm, February 8, 15 & 22, 2012.The FIRST Steps course consists of three sessions:1. Our Salvation;2. Our Statements; and3. Our Structure and Strategy.Following the FIRST Steps course, we lead all who are interested in a study of The Purpose-Driven Life to launch a new Growth Group. The Biblical Basis of Church Membership When an individual is comes to faith in Christ, he becomes a member of the body of Christ (1 Corinthians 12:13). Because he is united to Christ and the other members of the body, he is therefore qualified to identify with a local expression of that body. To become a member of a church is to formally commit oneself to an identifiable, local body of believers who have joined together for specific, divinely ordained purposes. In Acts 2:41-42, we read of a local body ofbelievers who met in an organized fashion to study, fellowship, celebrate communion, and pray. And Luke indicates that there was some record of who was part of this group by what he says in verse 41, “3,000 were added to their number.” The biblical basis for local church membership is seen in . . . A) The example of the early church. The New Testament assumes that Christians “connect” to a local church where they live out their commitment to Jesus. Each New Testament letter was written to a local church or a local church leader.Just as there was a list of widows eligible for financial support (1 Timothy 5:9), there may also have been a list of members that grew as people were saved (Acts 2:41, 47; 5:14; 16:5). In fact, when a believer moved to another city, gave him a letter of commendation (Acts 18:27; Romans 16:1; Colossians 4:10; 2 Corinthians 3:1-2).B) The existence of church government. The pattern throughout the New Testament is for pastors to oversee the local body of believers. Their duties presuppose a clearly defined group of members who are under their care (Acts 20:28; 1 Thessalonians 5:12; 1 Timothy 5:17; Hebrews 13:17; 1 Peter 5:2-3).C) The exercise of church discipline. In 1 Corinthians 5:2, Paul called for disfellowshipping a member. To formally exclude someone, you to have previously formally included him. Church discipline would be difficult, if one didn’t know who was in good standing and who wasn’t.D) The exhortation to mutual edification.Scripture exhorts believers to edify one another by practicing the “one anothers” of the New Testament (Hebrews 10:24-25) and using their spiritual gifts (Romans 12:6-8; 1 Corinthians 12:4- 7;1 Peter 4:10-11). Exhortations to this kind of ministry presuppose believers have committed themselves to other believers in a specific local assembly. Is a church membership role biblical? It’s as biblical as a video projector or a sound system or any other method used to carry out God’s work through His church. But one thing’s for sure, it is biblical for a believer to identify themselves with a local body of believers. The Practical Provisions Of Church MembershipA. Connectivity - Being part of a local church gives me a forum to obey the “one another” commands of Scripture.B. Responsibility - Being part of a local church gives me a forum to discover and use my spiritual gifts in ministry.C. Accountability - When I become part of a local church, I am not just saying, "I want to be part of the life of this church," but I am saying, "I want this church to be part of my life." I am saying that I want to be part of a group of believers to whom I give permission to speak the truth in love to me.Can I be a Christian without joining other believers in a local church? Yes, but it is something like - being a soldier without an army or a football player without a team. You will not get very far in fulfilling your calling and purpose. As believers, we were planned for God’s pleasure (worship), formed for God’s family (fellowship), created to become like Christ (discipleship), shaped for serving God (ministry), and made for a mission (evangelism). In Acts 2:42-47, as Luke describes the life of the early church. Notice how he describes their activity: “They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching (DISCIPLESHIP) and to the fellowship (FELLOWSHIP), to the breaking of bread and to prayer. Everyone was filled with awe, and many wonders and miraculous signs were doneby the apostles (WORSHIP). All the believers were together and had everything in common. Selling their possessions and goods, they gave to anyone as he had need (MINISTRY). Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved (EVANGELISM).”A purposeful Christian life can only be lived through committing to being part of a local church and working to make it purposeful.“I think that I shall never see, a church that’s all it ought to be; but I will work and pray and plan, to make my church be the best it can.”A teenager got hold of his role as part of the church when he entered the worship center wearing a cap and was told by an usher to take his cap off in the church. He replied, “I’m not wearing my cap in the church, I’m wearing my cap ON the church”We hope you can understand that when you join a church, you are not joining an organization, but you are committing to partnering with fellow believers in being the church together!D. Clarity - A story is told about a believer who was stone cold deaf. Despite this, he faithfully attended and participated in the local church of which he was a member. When asked why he bothered, he said, “I want everyone to know whose side I’m on.”Joining a church let's people know whose side you're on. It is a way to stand up and let others know you can be counted on.“Christians, like snowflakes, are frail, but when they stick together they can stop traffic.” - Vance HavnerDon’t you want your life to count? Don’t you want to life a life filled with purpose and significance? Don’t you want to be in the heart of what God is doing in this world? Then get involved in the life of a local church. Make the commitment to join AND to get involved. Beside other believers, you will make a difference in this world and God will make a difference in you.

Chris joined the staff of FBC in July of 2009. He is a graduate of Eastern New Mexico University with a degree in History. He is excited to be serving in his hometown of Portales. His philosophy of ministry is to connect teens with Jesus and send them out into the world as ministers and missionaries to reach their peers. Chris loves to read a good book, watch his favorite movies, and is a huge sports fan. He is fond of coffee, his family, and hanging out with teens, not in that order! He has been married to his college sweetheart, Amy, for 11 years and looks forward to the day he can celebrate his 60th wedding anniversary with her. They are blessed with two sons, Brett and Dylan, and one daughter, Ainsley. His goal in life is to spoil them rotten with love and attention.

What To Expect When You VisitWe understand the many thoughts that can come from visiting a new church, so we want you to feel completely comfortable when you visit. Below are some frequently asked questions. If you have any additional questions, don't hesitate to contact us before you visit with us.When are services?Services are on Sunday mornings at 9 a.m. and 11:00 a.m.What is the difference between services? Our 9:00 a.m. service is a traditional Baptist worship service, featuring piano and organ, a choir, and singing led by our Woship Pastor, Wayne Anderson, who leads us in a blend of traditional hymns and contemporary worship songs and choruses. Our 11:00 a.m. service is a contemporary service that employs use of praise and worship songs as well as other creative elements like video, drama, etc. Because this service is fairly new, we are still in the process of developing the instrumental part of our worship team. Presently, we make use of music videos as a vocal team leads us in singing. The teaching is the same in both services, with the only difference being that different and/or more contemporary elements are incorporated into the message during the 11:00 a.m. service. What should I wear?We want you to feel comfortable. After all, we are thrilled that you're joining us and want you to be more focused on the service than on what you're wearing. Most folks dress in their "Sunday best" for the 9 a.m. service, while the 11:00 a.m. crowd often dresses in jeans and tee shirts. However, you can also find several jeans being worn at 9:00 a.m. We think you'll fit in no matter how you dress.Where should I park? Our church has parking located at the corner of C and 2nd streets and behind our main building around our Fellowship Hall building. We have permission to use the Wells Fargo bank parking lot, too. While the main entrance into our building is on C street, several people enter through the door from the alley, the door from 1st street, or the door located off the parking lot on the corner of C and 2nd streets. Where do my children go? Bible Fellowships are provided for children of all ages at 10:00 a.m. Children in kindergarten and up attend worship with their parents. Activity pages are provided for parents to use with little ones during worship if necessary.Quality childcare is provided for babies through preschool during both worship hours. But we do not just do baby sitting! Curriculum is used for preschoolers and they are involved in learning activities at both hours. Am I expected to put money in the offering? If you are visiting with us, we don't expect you to put money in the offering, and you are welcome to just let it pass you by. If you consider FBC your church home, we'd love for you to prayerfully consider giving to the support of God's work through our church. You can give by check or cash during the service. Offering envelopes are provided in the pews for your convienence.
At FBC, we are attempting to recapture the biblical approach to living the Christian life, which involves fulfilling God’s purpose for individuals through their involvement in a purpose-driven fellowship of faith. THE CELEBRATION CIRCLE: Through seed sowing, cultivation, and harvest initiatives, we constantly invite folks in our city to join us on Sunday mornings to consider the claims of Christ. Since the primary purpose of our Sunday morning Celebration Services is for us to seek God’s face together, what better opportunity for an unbeliever to consider the Christian faith? In our outreach to our city, we seek to combine the ideas of “go & tell” with “come & see.” Our worship celebrations are like the foyer in your home - it's a place where folks can make acquaintences.THE COMMUNITY CIRCLE: We want to involve people in the community circle through involvement in a Sunday morning Bible Fellowship. In our Bible Fellowships our primary focus is on studying God’s Word together. This level of involvement moves them from the “foyer,” to the “living room” of our church family, where they can develop friendships. This is important, because we believe the church is not an organization to “join” but a family to be part of.This circle of involvement corresponds to the purpose of fellowship because when one gets involved in a Bible Fellowship, they begin to go deeper in their connection with fellow believers at FBC; and because biblical fellowship is always centered around God’s truth (Acts 2:42; 1 John 1:3; 7).THE COMMITMENT CIRCLE: We involve people in a higher level of commitment to Christ through involvement in a Growth Group. While a person can make acquaintances through worship, and develop friendships through being part of a Bible Fellowship; when they participate as part of a Growth Group, they can experience the church as “family.” Growth Groups are designed to be like the “kitchen” of your home – a place where family gathers to discuss their day, to help each other figure out how to deal with life’s problems, and to share experiences. The primary purpose of our Growth Groups is to share God’s life together.THE COMMUNION CIRCLE: A believer who, through involvement in a weekly Worship Celebration, a weekly Bible Fellowship and a weekly Growth Group, will be helped to enter into the Communion Circle, learning along with others how to love God supremely and love other selflessly through obeying the Great Commandment (Matthew 22:37-40). One has entered into the Communion Circle when they join with other believers to serve God's people together. THE COMMISSION CIRCLE: Through involvement in a weekly Worship Celebration, a weekly Bible Fellowship and a weekly Growth Group, a believer will also be helped to enter into the Commission Circle, working along with others in obeying the Great Commission (Matthew 28:19-20) as they share God's love together. Our church offers opportunities for our members to reach out to our city and the world through special outreach events, servant evangelism, & mission projects.
FBC loves members ofour military and their families! Under the leadership of our Pastor to Military Families,
Brian Strain, we seek to demonstrate in practical ways our support of our military families. Some things we do as a church are:1. Sponsoring block party outreaches at 801 housing for military families;2. Provide care for families of deployed personnel;3. Send "care packages" to deployed members;4. Allow families use of our church cabin in Glorieta, New Mexico, especially when a family has returned from a deployment. If you have interest in our ministry to military families or if you have an idea for how we can help meet a need, contact Brian Strain or any member of our staff.
Most of our Growth Groups meet on Sunday evenings at 5 p.m., but some meet on other nights of the week. Our Growth Group ministry is intended to be like the kitchen in your home. The place where the family gathers to discuss life and share joys and sorrows with one another. At this level, folks move beyond making acquaintances and developing friendships to experiencing church as family. Most people, once they have gotten involved in a Growth Group, find it to be a tremendous blessing. When a person participates in a Growth Group, They find it to be a place where best friends open up to one another and discuss their lives in a warm, caring, and safe atmosphere. Many of our inter-generational, family Growth Groups meet on Sundays from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., while a few groups meet on other times during the week. Our church pays for each group to have two childcare workers. Children are involved in the group as that group (and the children's parents) think best.Youth Growth Groups meet on Sunday evenings at the same time - from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.College Growth Groups meet on different nights of the week and are led by Dan & Cherylann Dozier. To learn more, you may contact them at: Dan's cell - (970) 290-8722; Dan's email - dan.dozier@att.net; Cherylann's cell - (970) 290-1750; Cherylann's email - cherylann.dozier@enmu.edu; Dozier's home phone - (575) 359-7201.
