Mission Nepal

Nestled between China and India, Nepal is about three-fifths the size of New Mexico, with a population equivalent to Texas, 26 million. Known for Mt. Everest, the Himalaya Mountains, Gurkha Soldiers, the birthplace of Buddha, the world's only Hindu Kingdom, a bloody massacre of the King and the Royal Family in 2001, and a "People's Revolution" that has crippled the economy over the past ten years. Until 1960 it was illegal to be a Christian in Nepal. It is still illegal to try to convert individuals to Christianity in Nepal and Christians are subject to rejection from their families and persecution within their communities.

In July of 2003 First Baptist Church of Portales accepted the challenge to become involved in the Jesus Film Project sponsored by Campus Crusade for Christ. The goal of this project is to reach people for Christ by translating the Jesus Film (a dramatized portrayal of the life of Christ based on the gospel of Luke) into the native or “heart” language of people groups around the world. None of the languages that Campus Crusade was then working on interested FBC Portales, but they felt led toward a small nation in South Asia with less than two percent Christians. It was determined to sponsor the translation of the Jesus Film into the next language targeted by Campus Crusade in Nepal. Within days of the determination to sponsor a language translation in Nepal Campus Crusade announced plans to produce the Jesus Film in the “heart language” of the Rana Tharu people in a very isolated region of southwestern Nepal.    The Jesus Film was the first movie ever produced in this language. The response was overwhelming! Over 5000 individuals showed up for the premiere showing of the Jesus Film in this language. People were eager to see this movie and desperately seeking for the peace that only Christ can offer.

The next commitments were to sponsor a team of two to travel around the region and show the Jesus Film, with a goal of 100 showings per year, and to sponsor a group of five church planters to encourage and disciple those who were accepting Christ as their Savior. In the past year, six new congregations have been established among the Rana Tharu.

FBC Portales has been involved in the construction of four meeting houses for Rana Tharu congregations, purchasing Bibles, the publication of a book on Christian marriage in Nepali, purchasing bicycles for church planters, providing needed computer equipment and motorcycles for several national Nepal CCC staff, micro business loans for displaced believers, drilling a well, helping with tuition for a theology student in Kathmandu, and sponsoring an additional nine church planters who target additional remote people groups in Nepal.   All this is in addition to the funds raised to sponsor the translation of the Jesus Film and the funds being used to sponsor our five church planters and the Rana Tharu Jesus Film Team.

Nepal Campus Crusade for Christ has been very active in planting churches in Nepal with 130 church planters trained so far and 380 new churches established in the last six years. Christianity is now the fastest-growing religion in Nepal. It is growing faster than the national population. It is great to see how a small congregation in Portales, New Mexico, challenged to step out in faith to make a small investment in God’s work in small nation on the other side of the world, is reaping KINGDOM-SIZED returns and rewards!
